Our History

The Federal Government of Nigeria did not allow the establishment of private polytechnics until January 1993 when the Education (National Minimum Standards and Establishment of Institutions) Decree of 1985 was amended. It was for the promulgation of this Decree that Grace Institute aspired to become Grace Polytechnic.

Grace Polytechnic has two campuses: one in Surulere, Lagos Central, and the other in Omu, Epe Division of Lagos State. Both campuses enjoy an atmosphere of peace and quietude as they are located away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Late Dr (Chief) O.O. Onamuti is hitherto the Chairman Governing Council of the second private polytechnic in Nigeria.

The man, Late Dr (Chief) O.O. Onamuti, without skepticism has proved beyond reasonable doubt via his empowerment strategy and scholarship scheme to indigent students from standard six throughout their respective professions in the universities, that he is a man of unparalleled benevolence whose proven integrity is evident in the lives of Nigerian students. He is a devoted Christian in the Anglican faith and leaves no stone upturned in service to God. He is a member of the Anglican Christian Fellowship, a member of the English Bible Class, Deputy Leader of the Guild of Stewards, Cathedral of St. Jude, Lagos. He was honored with the title of ‘Right Regent’ (Otun Balogun) in his home church, St. Paul’s Church, Omu, Ijebu where he doubles as the Chairman, Omu Progress Union of St. Paul’s Church, Omu Ijebu, Ogun State.

He was recognised locally and globally and decorated with honours home and abroad. In 1971, he was elected as a Fellow of the Incorporated Phonographic Society, London (The oldest Business Education Society in the World). Molusi College, Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State, Nigeria honoured him with a Golden Jubilee Merit Award for distinguished quality: Immense contribution and outstanding performances as a Molusian on 30 January 1998. He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Education, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State.

He was honoured with a Fellowship of the Nigerian Institute of Business Educators in October 2005 and an Award of Excellence by the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered) for his entrepreneurship and leadership skills in November, 2007.

Also in November 2014, the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) presented an Award of Excellence to the Chairman, Governing Council and Proprietor, Grace Polytechnic, Dr (Chief) O.O. Onamuti in recognition of his leadership acumen, passion, professional capabilities, contribution/dedication towards the educational sector and nation building in Nigeria.

In 2012, Grace Polytechnic was recognized as one of the ‘Best Enterprises’ in the field of education in Nigeria by the Socrates Committee, Oxford, U.K.

Grace Institute of Secretarial and Management Studies has been in the forefront for the development of Technical Education in Nigeria ever before we became a polytechnic. We took this bold step to become a polytechnic for the purpose of technological development of Nigeria.

At Grace Polytechnic, we believe that no country will transfer its technology to Nigeria; it is Nigerian indigenous institutions that will develop our technology.

Information Technology has turned the whole world into a global village. Our motto which is ‘ONLY THE BEST IS GOOD ENOUGH’ will serve as a base for our philosophy: ‘To foster technical, academic excellence aimed at producing a self-sufficient, practical–oriented individual in a highly stimulating environment devoid of discrimination within this Global Village’.

Members of our academic staff are well-qualified and experienced. This is evident in the fact that older polytechnics attract lecturers from the Institution to enrich their staff list. In addition, the academic staff do not go on strike (or any form of protest) that characterizes the disruptions of academic calendars in Nigeria`s tertiary institutions.

Students of Grace Polytechnic enjoy a personal rapport with all members of staff which enhances the friendly, cordial and conducive atmosphere for learning.

We are happy to welcome you to Grace Polytechnic as an institution of higher learning and of highly skilled technocrats contributing their own quota to technology development in Nigeria and all over the world at both the National and Higher National Diploma levels.

Products of Grace Polytechnic are all over the world including Nigeria Universities to pursue their degree programmes.

Some have completed their Master’s Degree while a few are on PhD programmes. Our students have been participating in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) since 2011.

Computer Engineering and Electrical/Electronic Engineering departments are functioning effectively with all the necessary equipment on the ground. Early in 2015, we want to mount the National Diploma in Estate Management and Science Laboratory Technology. We need assistance to get the necessary equipment for these programmes. Established Universities can assist with their equipment for the two programmes: Science Laboratory Technology and Estate Management.
We welcome short-term staff exchanges as well as staff development training from institutions abroad.
